, that it could slow the economy in many areas. you have a lot of defense contractors worrying about what will happen at the turn of the new year. it is really anybody's guess. in terms of congress and whether they can come together after the election, but before every new person takes office, there is hope that congress and the white house can come to an agreement anteater postponed those spending cuts and tax increases, or come to -- and either postpone those spending cuts and tax increases, or come to some agreement. i think everyone thinks they may wait -- they may postpone and wait until the new session comes in and let them figure it out. but the so-called lame-duck session might see reasons to make a deal before the new people coming in. we will see. host: the next call comes from adam in phoenix, arizona. you say you are a student. what are you studying? caller: and studying economics. host: you have heard our conversation this morning. and what do you think? caller: i have. mr. rugaber said he was surprised with the unemployment dropping, but i was just reading about a month ago

[applause] we went for al qaeda. we went for some of the late in. we accomplished that goal. and now if it -- we went for osama bin laden. we accomplished that goal. and now it is time. congressman ryan made very clear that governor romney has a very different view. although he says that he thinks we should get out in 2014, although he says that that makes sense, he says we should never have announced that and i might add, had not, the afghans would never step up, which should never have announced that and, when asked to guarantee you will get out, he says it depends. no, i'm serious. you heard it. it depends on the situation on the ground. it depends. well it depends on nothing other than the date as far as we're concerned. it is time for the afghans to take care of their own responsibilities. [applause] but like almost everything, it depends. it depends on which day you asking the question. [laughter] it depends. it depends on the circumstances. but it was not just on foreign policy, it depends. it was also on their attitude of wha

there was last night. like there was this exchange on the military. >> you don't cut defense by $1 trillion. that's what we're talking about. this invites weakness. look, do we believe in peace through strength? we bet you t you bet we do. >> devastating cuts on our military. when paul ryan condemns defense cuts as a nefarious democratic idea that he is fighting vali t valiantvalian valiantly against he did not mention he voted in favor of those exact same defense cuts. also on the issue of medicare, i mean, maybe it's been said enough now that it doesn't need to be said every time, but once again at the debate paul ryan pounded his chest and criticized democrats for a change in medicare funding that he's denouncing on the campaign trail. last night as a $716 billion cut to medicare. well, that's a cut to medicare that he put in his loan paown pn budget. you can be before that thing or against that thing but cannot simultaneously be for that thing and against that thing not if we're supposed to take you seriously on policy which is supposedly the whole idea of you. which brings us to the issue o

, what is the matter with you. what i would say in joe biden's defense and i would challenge anyone within the sound of my voice to send me a note, who was voted out of office because they were too arrogant or too condescending. i don't know that person. >> wait a minute. people don't like--people don't like condescension. but that's not what i think was going on here. you know what bothered me, and had he done this move once or twice, you know, it can be very effective. to do it constantly like that, it bothers me in two ways. first of all this is not a good way to win over voters who are on the defense. second of all imagine it turns all sorts of people off not just me. there are some midwestern states that are not entirely red you know. think about it this way. think about the president. what if we as a nation decided yeah that is the way our presidential debates should be conducted. these guys, you constantly talk over one another ridicule one another. >> there is that, thomas, but then there is the idea of the soft peddling, the happy warrior. when they got into the substance o

actually talked to his attorney during the hearing. defense attorney daniel king said even four months into the case, as he put it, we have not begun to understand the nature and depth of mr. holmes' mental illness. this is the second time the defense has referred to holmes' mental illness, but there was no suggestion that would be his defense. for that, he would need a psychiatric evaluation that could take six months. and now there is concern from both prosecution and the defense about the well-being of witnesses, including dr. lynne fenton, the psychiatrist holmes saw when he was a student at the university of colorado. because her name has been made public, including her appearance at a hearing in august, prosecutors say she hasn't been able to live at home. this investigation has already generated close to 20,000 documents, but witnesses are still being interviewed and evidence analyzed and the case could reach an extraordinary tens to hundreds of thousands more documents. both sides say they're going to need a lot more time to deal with all of this information. the judge will dec

, foreign policy and defense reporter for politico. tim, good morning. what do you expect romney to focus on in his speech at the virginia military institute on monday? >> yeah. the virginia military institute speech is going to focus primarily on foreign policy. it's going to be a big, broad speech about what he would do as commander in chief, and you can expect him to go straight to benghazi, to go straight to what he views as the president's inability to kind of take an aggressive foreign policy stance on the global stage. no doubt he is going to mention veterans, and i think he will also see him talk about his plan to raise defense spending. up to 4% of gdp, which is higher than it is even now. >> this is certainly about posturing, about sounding presidential, but how does this compare to president obama's last major foreign policy speech, the one that he maude at the united nations general assembly? >> it's going to be quite different. i mean, the president is probably more conciliatory and mitt romney is going to take a more aggressive tone towards arab states. he is going to ramp u

and the enthusiasm among republicans, and also the defensiveness among democrats since the debate. >> it is a little bit. one other thing i want to point out. romney seems to have searched national polls than battlegrounds. i think this something i want to keep tracking. i think it's -- it's a little piece of evidence right now and it's been something that you know the president is stronger in battle grounds than any other states. how much of romney's bump is in the other 41 states, if you will? and in the national polls and where in the battlegrounds maybe everything was fought to a draw? that's something that has to be a keconcern to the romney team. >> chris cillizza, when we looked at the narrowing in the battleground polls, especially virginia, we're seeing an impact there also in a very important senate race because there had been an advantage for tim kaine over george alan there, as the president at the top of the ticket was pulling ahead but now that it's narrowed they are dead even. >> yeah. i think virginia's the one to look at in terms of down ballot effect, because we expect that race be

on the republican ticket. >> when we equivocate on our values, when we show that we're cutting our own defense, it makes us more weak. it projects weakness. when we look weak, our adversaries are much more willing to attack us, more brazen in their atax. >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarky. >> why is that say? >> not a single thing he said is accurate. >> biden never took his foot off the gas. in one brief sentence, the vice president summed up the empty rhetoric of the romney campaign. >> stop talking about how you care about people. show me something. show me a policy. show me a policy where you take responsibility. >> many obama supporters were disappointed the president didn't hold mitt romney accountable for this 47% comments and his economic policies in general. vice president joe biden made up for it last night. he used 68 seconds to say exactly what needed to be said about the romney/ryan view of the middle class in this country. >> romney said, no, let detroit go bankrupt. we moved in and helped people refinance their homes. governor romney said, no, let foreclosures hi

per year, including three submarines. i will implement effective military defenses. >> where's he getting the money for this? and is all that necessary? >> that's a good question. we did a study at the center for american progress and the institute for policy studies, former assistant secretary of defense was on the board with me. we showed how if you cut national security spending, ed, not just the pentagon, but everything across the board, va, does you can cut a trillion dollars out and still bring us back to 2007, 2007 level spending in inflation-adjusted dollars. for 13 years now, we have been increasing the defense budget. you could easily cut -- to hear this man talk about what secretary gates was recommending, but to the point to increase the budget and build more ships is preposterous. we don't need that sort of increase in defense spend iing. what we need is for the national security budget to pay its efforts towards reducing the deficit while keeping us safe. we're not fighting china. we're not fighting a coalition of nations. e we're fighting, at best, some terrorists i

's called attack from a defensive position. the president has been attacked. i think it's time to return the favor to romney. your thoughts this week. >> it's what he had to do in the debate, didn't do, and it's what he has to do every day between now and the next debate. he has to draw the contrast on medicare and straighten out this myth that the president cut $716 million from medicare benefits. he didn't. they're cut from medicare providers like insurance companies that are overcharging. he has to attack on the issue of taxes. there aren't enough tax loopholes or tax deductions to pay for romney's tax cut unless you cut into home interest mortgage deductions, unless you get rid of state and local taxes. that will hit the middle class hard. you have to be honest about this. the debate hurt obama and helped romney, and romney's gotten a bump in the polls, although it seems to be flattening out. you look at the new poll in ohio, the president is at 51%, romney is at 47%. i think the president, the fundamental structure of the race hasn't been changed, but if he doesn't go on the attack,

in interviews and not sure she should be getting that defensive. that's for other people to do. she should be above the fray. >> i would love to interrue her, but with all due respect, she might say i know what i'm doing because after the alleged rebellion with tag and politico.com reported on her husband has at least seen some improvement in the numbers so while, you know, we read the articles, we are journalists and pundits or whatever the case may be, she perhaps believes she knows better for her husband and why she's chosen to be the attack dog and i don't like using that word in reference to any woman but she is going out attacking. >> clearly she feels that way. i learned the other day that she was the first wife of a presidential candidate to ever appear on "meet the press" which i was fascinated with. i don't know how that came about. if she insisted on it or she did or the campaign did. but i think that's really interesting that they feel that she's that effective whereas with michele obama, you know, she is doing stuff mostly off the radar. she's exciting the base. she's going ou
